Promoting Vietnamese Cultural Identity and Traditions During the Year of the Snake

In celebration of Tết Nguyên Đán – Vietnamese Lunar New Year 2025 (Year of the Snake), the Canada–Vietnam Cultural & Educational Council (CVCEC) partnered with Canadian schools and Vietnamese student communities to promote cultural understanding and preserve Vietnamese heritage. Through educational engagement and cultural activities, CVCEC highlighted the significance of Tết as a uniquely Vietnamese celebration rooted in tradition, identity, and intergenerational connection.

Lunar New Year, known in Vietnam as Tết Nguyên Đán, is not only a sacred moment for family reunions but also an opportunity to strengthen cultural identity and share Vietnamese heritage with the broader international community.

During the recent Lunar New Year celebrations marking the Year of the Snake 2025, CVCEC proudly collaborated with educational institutions including Newton International College and Upper Madison College, and participated in Tet events organized by Vietnamese student communities at Seneca Polytechnic and York University in Canada.

These engagements served as meaningful platforms to foster cultural dialogue and increase awareness of Vietnamese traditions within Canada’s multicultural environment.

Highlights of CVCEC’s Tet Activities

Throughout the series of celebrations, CVCEC focused on three core cultural elements:

  • Introducing Áo Dài – Presenting Vietnam’s traditional dress as a symbol of elegance, national identity, and cultural pride to international students and educators.

  • Clarifying Vietnamese New Year – Raising awareness that Tết Nguyên Đán represents Vietnamese Lunar New Year, distinct in its cultural practices and historical roots, and not solely understood through the broader term “Chinese New Year.”

  • Sharing Traditional Practices – Demonstrating bánh chưng wrapping, Vietnamese calligraphy, and storytelling about Tet traditions to help participants better understand the meaning of renewal, gratitude, and family unity embedded in the celebration.

For many Vietnamese living abroad, celebrating Tết far from home is both emotional and empowering. While geographically distant from Vietnam, the spirit of heritage remains strong through collective efforts to preserve language, customs, and cultural values.

CVCEC extends its sincere appreciation to all partners, volunteers, students, and community members who contributed to honoring and promoting Vietnamese culture during this festive season.

As we welcome the Year of the Snake, we wish everyone a year filled with prosperity, happiness, and success.

Happy Lunar New Year 2025.
Chúc mừng năm mới.
